First off. I have lots of experience with two types of attenuaters. Marshall Powerbrakes and THD's Hotplates. I prefer
and thus use the Powerbrake, my second choice WOULD be the Hotplate. There is NOTHING wrong with either of them. They will
NOT melt/fry a healthy transformer. What they will do is push your output section hard and if you do have some issues there,
you ARE gonna find them and maybe with smoke. I have never had an issue other than shortening the lives of my output
tubes by a month or two in over 20 years of using these. The first ones I used were homemade by a friend of mine and did all
sorts or weird things to my tone.
The current ones available are fine units and without them I would have no use for those fire breathin 100 watt heads
I own because I couldnt turn them up loud enough to push the output section, (which IS how the classic rocker got their tones
AND ruined their ears) without seriously injuring my hearing. These units and the powerbrake in particular are now an integrated
part of my rig and it adds WAY more to my tone then it "colors" it ,in any bad way.
There are many other choices out there now BUT since I dont have experience with them I aint gonna spew about them.
